Is Change Possible?

1/30/2019

Some of the most intelligent, motivated people sabotage their own success.  This is related to unconscious everyday thoughts also referred to as cognitive distortions identified by psychologist Aaron Beck and Dr. David Burns.

Sometimes you may have irrational thoughts that can get in the way of your success.  All of us get in our way.   The good news is that you can develop self awareness to spot and change irrational thoughts.  It is all a matter of discipline and retraining your thinking.  Instead of thinking you can’t do something or it is impossible, you need to modify your self- talk to be positive and motivating to help you reach your goals or aspirations.   For example, if you tell yourself, there is no way I can do that exercise, or get up the early in the morning, you have already programmed your brain that you can’t do it.  Modify your self talk and get out of your own way.   Stop sabotaging yourself.

There was an article in Forbes about self discipline and five actions to take to become more self disciplined.  There were two actions that stood out. The first one was to quit complaining.  We all have a lot to be thankful for, and complaining is counterproductive and gets you nowhere.  You will miss out the on the opportunity to improve.   Don’t say “it is too hard, I could never do that. ”  Rethink your statement “I am glad I am healthy  enough to be able to exercise!”

The second action is to eliminate distractions.
If you are making a conscious effort to improve and workout to get healthy. I challenge you to try this..Turn off cell phone, turn off notifications and focus on the task at hand.  Be present in what you are doing, whether it be working out, spending time with your family, eating dinner, etc. This will help you become more self disciplined not only in  in all aspects of life.  Before you know it, you will realize how much more productive and happy  you will become!

So is it possible for people to change their habits?  Great news…you can, but you have to WANT to change.  Speaking and acting are two different things. You need to develop the necessary self awareness to spot and change how you approach what you doing.

Positivly Impacting Others

Talking about your fitness goals just might get your friends or anyone you meet  thinking about their own goals. Particularly when you tie those goals to your motivation – things like wanting to have more energy or live longer – you can encourage your friends, who likely are motivated by similar things, to think about making their own fitness plans. As they begin working on their fitness goals, you will each reinforce the other’s motivation and share the excitement of making progress.  At 1N1 Fitness,  I see my clients motivate me and each other everyday trying to push each other to do more. We have just all challenged each other to push ourselves to do another Half Marathon.  The excitement of doing it together makes it all the more fun.

You will begin to realize there is a whole other world out there when you begin to work out.  There is a group of people that have the same goals as you to be a better, healthier version of yourself everyday.    They help you push yourself and give you a different perspective on why you are doing what you are doing.  Sometimes you may not even realize that you are positively impacting them just by what you are accomplishing.   So always push not only yourself but others to be the best they can be.

Get back on Track - Fall is Here!

9/7/2018

Summer is finally over and after 3 fun months of swimming, beach days and procrastinating on your exercise, it is time to get back in your routine.  Fall- what is not to love about it?  Your warm sweaters, the holidays and best of all....the perfect weather to exercise outdoors.

As a Personal trainer, I can attest that forming a habit  is critical to having a solid routine.  Summer is full of bbqs, pool parties, vacations which makes it difficult to keep on track with a routine.  Once the kids are back to school and you are back on track, you can get started.  Fall is more structured than any other time of the year.  This is the perfect opportunity for you to start an exercise routine.

Before you know it the Holidays will be here, candy, turkey, wine, cookies, and it is the time of year for glutton and poor diet choices.  Use you time wisely in this next couple of months to form your routine and get on track.  You will be both mentally and physically in check to glide through the Holidays.

Next consider the weather.  You have no excuses…it is not too hot, not too cold.  It is actually JUST RIGHT!
If you are interested in 2 complimentary sessions, we can help you started on your routines, contact us!

Personal Trainer or Workout Buddy?

7/19/2018

What are your thoughts around this?  I may be bias on this, but I will share with you my thoughts.

Getting to the gym takes motivation. You may think I will find a friend who will go with me, but you may want to rethink that one.   When you are really ready to commit to yourself, your goals and your fitness, you need to find the right personal trainer.   Personal trainers understand how you can reach your goals in every workout. They hold you accountable to short term and long term goals and create personalized, customized workouts.

If you decide to workout with your friend, they may not have the same goals as you and may want to do different workouts.  Therefore, how will you motivate each other?   There will be those times when one of you cannot make it, which sets a precedence that it is okay to miss.   Not only that, there is a chance you can be uncomfortable, self conscious about yourself and it could become a competition and harm your relationship with your friend.

A personal trainer will help you compete with yourself so ultimately are making yourself better. If you want someone to hold you accountable and that you can count on every time, a personal trainer is the one for you!  Get started today…come in for a complementary session.

Good or Bad Exercise- Is there such a thing?

6/21/2018

You have decided you are going to get in shape.  You have a plan in your head.  You are going to go hard core and do as much as exercise as possible, lift the heaviest weights, do tons of cardio to get in shape as quickly as possible.   Day one goes great, you feel terrific, now you wake on day two with a dreaded feeling of pain and getting out of bed seems unbearable because you are in so much pain.  This is a case of DOMs(delayed onset muscle soreness)  This is not something to ignore.  You must let your body recover from intense workouts.  It is critical not to overwork your muscles and make sure you pace yourself.  Exercise is a journey and something you commit yourself to do.   Don't risk the chance of injuring yourself by creating intense workouts in the beginning...that will all come in time.  I would love to hear from you on your exercise routines that work for you. How do you stay consistent with your good exercise without burning out?  What inspires you to get up and exercise everyday?   I know for myself, I pace myself  similar to a marathon ...some weeks I know I can do more and sometimes I need to listen to what my body is telling me and adjust my normal routine.  Listen to your body and pace yourself this will help you create consistency in "good exercise".

Are you in a Rut or a Groove?

4/27/2018

Ask yourself this question?  Are you in a Rut or a Groove?  You may be saying to yourself, Life is great, I am happy, healthy, but no forward progress. But do you have a groove?  Do you have something that motivates you everyday?  Something that keeps you going...something that makes you  a BETTER version you?  Get into a groove" is a good thing and "stuck in a rut" means you're kind of not able to change directions without a lot of effort.

Ruts can destroy you. A rut is that place where forward progress stops. You are spinning and it can eventually drive you crazy.

A groove can take you to new heights.  Grooves are when things are great and you feel a sense of accomplishment.  Are you in the same place you were a year ago and feel like you have not accomplished something you set your mind to?  Did you tell yourself I am going to get in shape, but you start and stop several times and now you are stuck.  If you are in a rut and can't seem to get yourself out.
Take a risk: Try something new, try a new workout, find someone to motivate you.  Try doing something different and stick with it.
So I challenge you with this question...Are you stuck?  Or, are you in the groove and need to keep removing the barriers in order to keep your momentum going?
