Some of the most intelligent, motivated people sabotage their own success. This is related to unconscious everyday thoughts also referred to as cognitive distortions identified by psychologist Aaron Beck and Dr. David Burns.
Sometimes you may have irrational thoughts that can get in the way of your success. All of us get in our way. The good news is that you can develop self awareness to spot and change irrational thoughts. It is all a matter of discipline and retraining your thinking. Instead of thinking you can’t do something or it is impossible, you need to modify your self- talk to be positive and motivating to help you reach your goals or aspirations. For example, if you tell yourself, there is no way I can do that exercise, or get up the early in the morning, you have already programmed your brain that you can’t do it. Modify your self talk and get out of your own way. Stop sabotaging yourself. There was an article in Forbes about self discipline and five actions to take to become more self disciplined. There were two actions that stood out. The first one was to quit complaining. We all have a lot to be thankful for, and complaining is counterproductive and gets you nowhere. You will miss out the on the opportunity to improve. Don’t say “it is too hard, I could never do that. ” Rethink your statement “I am glad I am healthy enough to be able to exercise!” The second action is to eliminate distractions. If you are making a conscious effort to improve and workout to get healthy. I challenge you to try this..Turn off cell phone, turn off notifications and focus on the task at hand. Be present in what you are doing, whether it be working out, spending time with your family, eating dinner, etc. This will help you become more self disciplined not only in in all aspects of life. Before you know it, you will realize how much more productive and happy you will become! So is it possible for people to change their habits? Great news…you can, but you have to WANT to change. Speaking and acting are two different things. You need to develop the necessary self awareness to spot and change how you approach what you doing.
